BMI Airlines

by Web Master on April 19, 2012

Facts about BMI Airlines

BMI airlines also called British Midland International has quite a long history dating back to 1938. The company started as Air Schools Limited that was meant for training pilots, and in 1946, a parent company was formed, called Derby Aviation Limited, which started offering freight and charter flights, and aircraft maintenance services, apart from air training. In 1953, license was granted to Derby Aviation for schedule flights between Jersey to Wolverhampton and Burnaston, and the training school was stopped. In 1956, the company started international flights to holiday destinations in Europe and Ostend. Derby Aviation became Derby Airways in 1959, and domestic flights were launched throughout the United Kingdom.

The company then changed its name to BMA (British Midland Airways) in 1964, after purchasing Mercury Airlines, which operated charter and schedule flights from Manchester Airport. In 1968, BMA was acquired by banking and investment group in London called Minster Assets. The airline flourished and expanded its operations under General Manager Michael Bishop, who was the former manager in Mercury Airlines. In 1971, the Boeing 707 was included in the company’s fleet; however, Bishop leased these aircrafts to other operators, and continued to use turboprops for their services. All this changed in 1981, when the whole fleet of BMA was converted to jet aircrafts, and all of them were used for the company’s scheduled and charter flights.

In 1978, there were major changes and BMA relinquished its continental routes of Frankfurt and Brussels to Birmingham to British Airways, and in turn acquired regional routes covering Glasgow, Isle of Man, Jersey, Dublin, Belfast, Heathrow airport and Liverpool. There was quite a bit of corporate restructuring during 1992 to 1997, and the fleet was changed to Embraer and Airbus aircrafts.

In 2001, the airline was rebranded BMI airlines, giving it a new corporate identity. The logo was “ bmi” in royal blue with a white background, with the tail of the aircraft having a faded Union Jack. Airbus A330 was inducted into the fleet and new routes to the USA from Manchester were announced in the same year. BMI airlines continued to grow with passengers increasing to 10.1 million in 2005. Routes to Mumbai and Riyadh were started in the same year from London, and BMI continued to expand in the international arena. British Mediterranean Airways was bought by BMI in 2007, which resulted in the expansion of routes to the Middle East, Central Asia, and Africa.

In 2009, Lufthansa completely took over BMI, and in the restructuring, several routes making a loss were suspended and several aircrafts were reduced from the fleet. In 2011, British Airways that is owned by IAG bought BMI from Lufthansa. The deal included the two BMI subsidiaries, BMI Regional and Bmibaby; however, IAG did not retain either. In May 2012, BMI Regional was bought by Sector Aviation Holdings, and the company is presently functioning as an independent airline. BMI airlines is now a fully owned subsidiary of British Airways and all international flights are integrated into BA. Where is Toronto?

by Web Master on February 28, 2012

Toronto is not only the provincial capital of Ontario, Canada, but it is also the largest city in the whole country. In relationship to the rest of the state, Toronto can be located on the map in the Southern part of Ontario. It’s also on the northwestern shore of Lake Ontario.

The original Toronto territory was bought by the British Crown back in the 18th century. It was originally called the Town of York and was also the capital of Upper Canada at the time. It received its present name in 1834 when it was incorporated as a city.

This major Canadian city has also had its troubles over the years. It was ransacked in the Battle of York during the War of 1812. It’s also survived a few huge fires. One was in 1849; the other big one was 1904.

Toronto is not just the biggest city in Canada, but also the fifth most populous city in all of North America. There are 2.6 million Toronto residents, by the 2011 Census’ tally.

This Ontario city is also the center of Canada’s commercial capital. It is here that the Toronto Stock Exchange resides, of course, and this one city is home to the country’s five largest banks. Some of the biggest businesses in Toronto include aerospace, software production, transportation, telecommunications, medical research and publishing.

The city covers 243 square miles. Its northwestern shoreline, along the shore of Lake Ontario, is 29 miles. Both the Toronto Islands and Port Lands reach out into Lake Ontario. There are also three rivers that intersect within Toronto. These are the Humber River, which is on the western side, the Don River, which is east of the downtown area and the Rouge River, which is on the east side of the city.

Toronto is home to a lot of culture. There are six full opera companies operating within city limits, and two symphony orchestras. Canada’s National Ballet is centered in Toronto, for instance.

This city has many tourist attractions. One of these is the Royal Ontario Museum, which is a world culture and natural history museum. You can see all 5,000 of the animals housed at the Toronto Zoo. For something truly unique, the Gardiner Museum is the only Canadian museum that displays nothing but ceramics. The Bata Shoe Museum is also an unusual collection.

If you’re a sports fan, you probably already realize Toronto is the only Canadian city represented with seven major league sports. Of course, there’s a hockey team. However, there’s also a Major League Baseball team and a National Basketball Association team, as well.

Toronto is governed by what’s called a single-tier municipality utilizing a mayor-council system. This structure was laid out by the City of Toronto Act. What must make it much easier city to govern is the fact that Toronto has a reputation for being one of the safest major cities in North America. For instance, while Atlanta averaged 19.7 homicides per 100,000 people in 2007, Toronto only averaged 3.3 during that same time period.

If you could only visit one Canadian city, Toronto would make an excellent choice.
